The American hairdresser Jack Martin doesn't think so. As a famous hair colorist, he believes it's his job to show men, especially women, how solid and beautiful gray hair can be. Bored Panda tried to contact the skilled person who made these changes when they could. Jack Martin, a well-known hair colorist, and artist, told us what he knew about silver and gray hair color.
Martin said, "I've had my fair share of hair transformations over the years, but one that really jumps out to me was a client who came to me with a problem. She had been using at-home box color every three to four weeks for years to change her gray hair to brown. She spent more time in nature now that she was retired, so she didn't want to change her hair color as often. Her hair was also very damaged. So, we decided to give her hair a silver makeover. This gave her natural gray color a touch of shine and cut down on hairdresser visits. Let's just say that it was a good choice."
Martin went on to explain how he makes silver or gray hair colors that match the natural gray pattern of a client's hair. "I use a color extractor to get rid of any last bits of fake color. Then, I lighten the rest of the head while leaving the gray roots alone. This gets the hair ready for the new silver color. Next, I use the natural gray pattern of the hair as a guide for the new color. I ask my clients to come in with their roots three to four inches long so I can see how their natural hair color looks. Then I used that design to make the rest of the hair. Some people have mostly gray hair in the front, & back is darker, so I match that and add some darkness."
During the assessment process, Jack also talked about working with clients who want to change to silver or gray hair. "I'm cautious about how I do it. Before I give my professional advice, I know what the client wants and how much maintenance they are ready to do.
Martin was asked how to keep the silver or gray color between hair visits. He said, "I tell them to use shampoos and conditioners without sulfates and to stay away from chlorine and salt water." I also tell them to get touch-ups every two to three months."
Last but not least, we asked Jack how he thought the trend of gray hair would change. "I've been quoted as saying, 'Embracing your natural gray hair is a sign of confidence and grace. "It's not just a fad; it's a way of life." And I think that. With the rise of the "granny hair" trend and more and more celebrities and influential people accepting their natural gray, I think we'll see an even more significant shift toward people embracing their natural gray and wanting to enhance it with silver and gray shades at the salon.
