Many people like to spend time at the beach collecting shells and rocks. But Anna Chan, an artist who lives in New York, took this popular game to the next level. When the Covid-19 pandemic hit, Chan, who makes jewellery for a living, stopped getting jobs. So, she and her 10-year-old daughter spent their days at the beach to kill time. So, they started collecting seashells and making sculptures that looked like animals.
Chan ensured that the shells he chose for each animal matched its real-life traits. It certainly looked like a work of art. The first thing Chan made out of sand and shells was a turtle. So, using her skill and her daughter's creativity, they could mix different seashells to make all kinds of characters in their seashell art. Because of this, they are now known on Instagram for their beautiful art made with different types of seashells.
What started as something for Chan to do during lockdown has turned into one of his main artistic goals. "The seashells I find give me ideas for my work. I spent several months collecting moon snails in a bucket. The snails became the sheep when I finally figured out how to use them without being too fake. Chan said.
